Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Three friends and I have chosen to take part in the Yorkshire Warrior obstacle run for this charity as I have recently lost my dad to prostate cancer. On April 1st 2016 my healthy, active dad had a stroke, which was a massive shock to everyone as he was never ill. Being so strong willed he recovered extremely well from this and got back to doing the things he loved; fishing, dry stone walling and tending to his allotment being amongst those hobbies. Then in October 2016 we had another shock. Dad was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. He was given a prognosis of ‘many years’, so things didn’t seem too negative. Hospital appointments in both January and March were no different, with the doctors sticking with his hormone treatment. However, in June we were told that his cancer was no longer being controlled and so they changed his treatment. A month later we were told that this treatment was also not working; his cancer was a lot more aggressive than the doctors realised and that there was nothing else that they could do. Dad deteriorated quickly and only a week after we had received this news, my dad passed away on Tuesday 25th July, peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his family.

Currently one man every 45 mins dies as a result of prostate cancer. This is a horrific statistic that needs to change and the only way this can happen is through research into potential treatments and cures. The money raised will also help support those men diagnosed and their families to cope with receiving such news.
